Olympic discussions
This is Bradley Wiggins on his way to Olympic gold in the mens time trial.
The Olympics were a great success and London has never been better.
But we were amused by some of the spectators. The Olympics, unlike almost any other major sports event is attended by people who simply want to experience the Olympics, regardless of the the sport they see, which they may well know nothing about.
This was exemplified by the Mens Time Trial.
The riders go off at 90 second intervals and it is the person who completes the course in the shortest time who wins. Simple as that. And so a rider should come through every 90 seconds, give or take a bit depending on whether the next rider through is going faster or slower than the last one.
The crowd waited expectantly for the first rider and through he went in a cacophony of sound. About a minute went past when a woman standing next to us said "He's got a big lead...!"
It seems no one had told her they don't all start at once.
The riders most likely to win start last and so the reigning Olympic time trial champion started last, before him was Bradley Wiggins, as winner of the Tour de France, and before him was the reigning world time trial champion.
This conversation was overheard between a spectator and a marshal:
Spectator: "Where's Bradley Wiggins?"
Marshal: "He's last but one"
Spectator: "Last but one?! What's gone wrong? I thought he was supposed to win!"
We agree with Lord Coe when he said the spectators made the Olympics, but perhaps not in quite the way he meant.
